The Easiest, Easy Cloth Diaper Cover Pattern

I am a stay at home, work from home mom. My choice to use cloth diapers was driven from my goal to minimize repeat baby expenses.
Unfortunately, when I researched cloth diaper covers, I was overcome by how expensive they were. When I looked at making my own, the patterns involved machine sewing, a skill I lacked. Disheartened, I set about to try to sew diaper covers by hand, but it seemed to take too long.
That’s when I went on a mission to find a diaper cover pattern that didn’t need machine sewing, elastic or special materials. It had to be quick, easy and require materials I likely had on hand being a non-sewer. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find any appealing options that were picture worthy to use on a regular basis. Forgive me for wanting something that looked “finished” and somewhat “cute” for my newborn baby.
So, I spent many hours perfecting my own pattern. And here it is - a diaper cover that you can literally just cut out of a fleece blanket and be done with it! For just a few dollars, I'm sharing this easy no-sew diaper cover pattern with you! Read on below.

Cheap DIY Fleece Diaper Covers
Fleece is an ideal material for diaper covers. It repels moisture and dries quickly if wet. It's also soft and comfortable. It has a bit of a stretch in one direction of the fabric. You can wash and dry it with regular diaper laundry. And it comes in all kinds of attractive patterns and colors. Best of all, who doesn't receive multiple thick fleece baby blankets as gifts? I think I received at least 3 of them during my baby shower. With babies not allowed to use blankets anymore for sleeping due to SIDS risk, these extra blankets can be put to good use when they are transformed into multiple fleece diaper covers. It's important to make sure the fleece is a quality thick material (you can't see your hand behind it).

When I resolved to make my own covers, I also started searching the clearance aisle at Walmart for these blankets. I could usually find one for $3.50. The regular price is only $4.50. You can make up to 4 covers for a small baby out of one 30x30 fleece blanket if you are okay with doing 3 inches worth of hand sewing. That's less than $1 per cover for less than 10 minutes worth of work! If you don't want to sew at all, you can get 2 covers out of one 30x30 fleece blanket. Either way, you are saving a lot of money and time!
Even though fleece repels moisture, it's important to change your baby's diaper every 2 to 3 hours to prevent some dampness when saturation is reached. For times when you may go longer than 3 hours between diaper changes, like at night, I recommend that you invest in a few pairs of plastic pants that cost just a couple of dollars apiece. Using your own hand made fleece diaper covers during the day and Gerber waterproof pants at night will give you the full coverage you need to avoid investing in expensive name brand diaper covers that cost $15 to $20 a piece. Please note that the Gerber waterproof pants in sizes 0-3 months or 3-6 months are hard to find in local stores, but Amazon.com does sell them online, and I've found them at my local Babies R Us. |
